I am sitting in urgent care. I finished collective bargaining negotiations for my ready-mix client with a wage proposal the union will recommend for ratification.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
But after yesterday, and the build up I have been dealing with, the wife and I are seriously looking at getting the fuck out of California when our youngest is done with high school. I could sell my house here and buy something like this cabin outright with money to spare. It is a few years off, but the thought is in my head. Flagstaff and Albuquerque also seem like candidates.
Am giving it serious thought. California has lost its damn mind. I never imagined not wanting to live here for the rest of my life.

Dude, as an Alabamian, I’ll vouch for TN, too.
Nashville is the most bang for buck of anywhere in the US, tons of jobs, cheap(ish) housing, no state income tax.
I’m more partial to Chattanooga, which has a decidedly West Coast-meets-South flair to it. Plus a lifetime’s supply of mountain roads, rock climbing, kayaking...
But Flagstaff is one of my favorite cities in the West.

Tennessee and Alabama are very similar except the whole “Alabama” thing (and issues that come with it). Wife went to school at Samford so I’ve spent quite a bit of time in that neck of the woods.

Collective bargaining. In my teacher union local, woe be unto the unit member who finds himself on the disadvantaged side of one of the union’s conflicts of interest and has the temerity to speak of it.
Persona non grata
because I recognize their conflict of interest and won’t allow them to represent me with HR. Dirty lying bastards, my union president and VP. There’s practically nothing I have good to say about POTUS 45, but he sees unions for what they have become.

Well now, you know I lived in Sacramento for 14 god damn years and I actually liked the area. The things that got to me were there are to many damn people, the air pollution, the traffic, the shitty schools, and the crazy high cost of living.
Now I live in Northwest Montana and have the same job. Sure I have to fly to california once a month but I live on 2.5 acres, have a 2400 SF house with a valley view and a $1600/month mortgage payment. I ski 50 days a season and ride mountain bikes on trails literally feet from my doorstep. I’ve shot and eaten turkeys from my yard.
My kids go to a very good school and will be able to get a decent secondary education in state college at a reasonable price.

You might like Austin. Hip place, though you’d recognize the traffic. Lots of days to drive the Sunchaser with the top down. Still relatively cheap, and you could live farther out from the city. Economy is doing reasonably well, no state income tax, lots of people moving here, lots of building.

Hahahaha, very true! I literally couldn’t take the heat though.
Those 100* / 100% humidity summer days killed me. I could buy a McMansion for the cost of my rent, but I’m very content being so close to the ocean. The current housing market is not sustainable for me at my current rate, but you never know what will happen!

I’m gonna put in a plug for the city of my youth: Indianapolis. No traffic problems, sports, culture, good neighborhoods, and a low cost of living that can’t be beat.
I’m liking Dallas okay over the last 17 years, though the traffic is kinda bad sometimes.

Albuquerque would be lucky to have you, and as a native I can heartily recommend it. However, the lawyering is more interesting in Southern New Mexico. I don’t know if something is in the water, or what, or why, but folks down south love to roll the dice and see what happens at trial. I know a couple of lawyers who practice/practiced down here specifically because even in mundane civil practices that specialized in things like real estate transactions and development, they still wind up in court rooms trying cases on a really regular basis. If a place Flagstaff sized interests you, check out Las Cruces. Lower cost of living, way better winter, mountains and snow are never more than a couple of hours away when you want them and it is still something of a university town.
Downsides, the economy is primarily made up of the university, state agency offices, federal agency offices and White Sands Missile Range, so government workers are the norm here and are the jobs of choice. It is also properly hot in early summer, and properly windy at times in the spring.
There is also a dairy industry between Las Cruces and El Paso that constantly goes bankrupt, gets in trouble for labor issues and/or massive environmental problems for ground water pollution. There is also a bunch of agriculture north of Las Cruces in the form of onion farming, chili growing and pecan orchards that could always use good legal representation (and they’re going to need a lot more of it once New Mexico finally finishes losing our big water case involving ground water pumping along the Rio Grande to Texas).

Social issues that most think about are pretty non existent in the main cities.Cops are just as racist everywhere it seems. Rural is rural and its just as bad in Oregon/Rural Cali/and way worse in the North as it is here, if not worse.
We’re trying to build ice rinks pretty quick here. The talent is still getting there though. It takes time to develop something and the team is only 20 years old. We’re probably 2-4 years from seeing southern talent more prominent in the NHL. Blake Geoffrin is our hometown talent so far. I get to do a D league scrimmage with our team on Bridgestone Ice in march.

Well, still voted big orange and still has a governor with some regressive views. But I know progress isn’t instant :) And yeah, Oregon can be pretty wacky once you get outside of Portland/Salem/Eugene.
With a name like Geoffrion, he has no excuse not to be a player. Kind of teasing about the hockey - I used to give some Texans some cajoling 20 years ago when remarking about what their state put back in the game. Hasn’t changed much.

Most of the people in my area are Republican but at a very modest level. Mostly because higher incomes trump(pun intended) social issues. A lot of hold the more libertarian standpoint(less gov, less taxes, ) but like i said the money is more important than the social stuff. Also Hillary sucked as a candidate otherwise I would have leaned Dem compared to normal(no I did not vote for trump either).
Geoffrin was almost a cheat code though because his dad, grand dad, and great grand dad all played in the NHL. They just happened to live in the same city as me.

Yep, people will send others down the river (or cut off their nose to spite their face) to save themselves a few bucks in taxes, or to keep up false pretenses that they built something themselves. We’re living it now. It’ll be interesting how that place evolves over time, I suspect much of it is on the verge of being purple, at least.
My “no excuse” line is about Geoffrion’s past, yeah. When players don’t come from a family history, then it is impressive.

Well, the interstate is. And I pity all the yupsters who live outlying enough that they have to use the big roads.
I live Northside of city center. Work is a hellacious 6 minute drive away. I drive about 70 miles/day seeing clients within a 50mi radious, and almost never encounter an issue.
There are about 3 pinch points that can be bad. And when they’re bad, they’re awful. But if you don’t deal with those, traffic is honestly delightful.
And, when the interstate gets hairy, it’s an excellent excuse to play on our surface streets. Between the river, mountains, and rail lines, there are many many curves.
Dang. Now I miss my Miata again..
